Silversky Protect Pet Insurance | Getting to know Luna & Sola
Contributing Writer: Rui Ying
Introduction – Your first name and background of how you got / met your pet, how you fell in love with your pet
I’m Rui Ying and I first met Luna at a rescuer’s house. Honestly it is cliche to say it was love at first sight, but it really was and still is, love at first sight. She was so tiny and so skinny, with a small body and huge huge eyes. I was supposed to foster her until she could find a suitable forever home, but I guess she found her forever home with me. Sola came unexpectedly, just like how some things in life catch us off guard. I went to visit him, his siblings and mother at a fosterer’s house and left there that same day with sola in a cardboard box and the rest was history.
1. What’s the story behind your pet’s name? Is there a special meaning or a funny story?
Luna was initially called Greysie, cause they needed a name at the vet and the rescuer was running out of ideas and decided to name her based on her colour – grey tabby. She was then renamed Luna because I liked the moon and she was the colour of the moon.
Sola, similarly was named that because
1. To keep in theme with Luna’s name and
2. He’s orange.
Eventually I realised how suitable their names are, because Luna is the ice princess (quiet, aloof) and Sola is a huge ball of energy (golden-retriever vibe).

2. What do you look out for if you’re looking to buy pet insurance?
For practical reasons, the affordability of the premium such as the price I have to pay for the premium per month. At the same time, I will also look into the amount of coverage provided such as how much the insurance covers and offsets the vet fees since vet fees can go up to large amounts. I will also consider the entry age as Luna is turning 5 and I would be concerned whether she is within the age limit to be insured.
3. What do you like most about Silversky Protect pet insurance?
I like that we are able to choose our vet, without being limited to specific vet clinics which can be inconvenient for us especially if there is an emergency and we are looking for the nearest one available. At the same time, we also don’t have to worry about the clinics being full/unavailable in the event that we are only limited to a few since there might be a chance most of us goes to the same few ones.
4. What’s the naughtiest thing your pet has ever done? Do you think pet insurance can cover it?
They are generally well-behaved but I guess scratching up the sofa could be considered damage? However, the sofa is already old and due for a replacement so we didn’t see that as an issue. Apart from that, they do go for annual check-ups and vaccinations so that is a cost that we cannot scrimp on. Luna had an UTI once in the ~4 years I had her and the vet fees amounted to about $190ish as they needed to do ultrasound and give her some medication. Of course, it’ll be good to be protected.

5. Any suggestion or advice to people who are still shopping around or considering pet insurance?
When considering whether to get pet insurance, always consider the potential costs of vet fees and do the math (comparing premium costs with coverage provided by the insurer and how much of the vet fees can be offset) and the ease of claim as the more convenient it is to claim the lesser headache we will have especially when we are busy caring for our furkids/focusing on their recovery.
From the Silversky Team:
Ensuring that our furkids are protected, especially during unforeseen medical situations, is one of the best ways we can care for them. Pet insurance, like Silversky Protect, helps us focus on their recovery without being overwhelmed by financial stress.
If you’re considering pet insurance, take your time to compare policies, check coverage limits, and think about your pet’s unique needs. A little planning today can save a lot of worry tomorrow!
